Tea & Hydration

A healthy adult should aim to consume 8 cups (2 litres) of fluid every day.

Therefore, two to three cups of tea daily can significantly contribute to the body’s hydration. It is a common myth, that tea or any other caffeine-containing beverage which will cause a diuretic effect which will have a negative impact on the body’s hydration level.

In a recent review of studies on the effects of caffeine ingestion and fluid balance (57) made the following three conclusions:

  • Large quantities of caffeine have a diuretic effect;
  • Single servings of caffeine at levels found in a cup of tea have little or no effect;
  • A tolerance to caffeine develops so any diuretic effect seen is dimished in people who regularly drink tea
